VOLUNTEERS IN CHARGE OF PATIENTS’ TRANSPORT
Many patients, after an operation or an admission to hospital, must undergo courses of treatment at the hospital complex. They must go there every day for many weeks, which may be difficult for them, owing to their precarious state of health. Not all of them can rely on a relative driving them, waiting with them the end of the treatment and then driving them back home. A service of patients’ transport has been organized to cope with their needs: some volunteers carry it out using their own car. The main feature of this type of voluntary service is a volunteer having a bent for driving and being extremely careful. Only self-sufficient patients are driven.
The volunteer’s job is not limited to the mere transport; he/she walks with the patient to the treatment, waits with him keeping him company, takes care of the following appointments and reports the patient’s possible inconveniences. Volunteers receive a repayment in kilometres for their out-of-pocket expenses and are covered by an insurance policy which, should they be responsible for an accident, would integrate their personal policy and refund the damage to their car.
